New Wireless Phone Conglomerate Debuts National Cellular Service.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Apr. 5--FORT WORTH, Texas--Verizon Wireless -- a combination of Bell Atlantic, PrimeCo Communications, and Vodafone AirTouch wireless properties -- launched its national cellular service yesterday and said it will become publicly traded by year's end.

The new company will spend $3 billion upgrading its wireless networks so it can offer products such as Internet access over cellular phones and two-way short messaging service to its customers.

"Our goal is to continue to grow our customer base and to create even more value going forward, and we'll do that by delivering quality, speed, innovation and ... a better value package than anyone else in wireless today," said Denny Strigl, chief executive of Verizon Wireless.
