Court Says Theaters Run By Plano, Texas-Based Company Aren't Discriminatory.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Apr. 10--The new Tinseltown movie theaters and their stadium-style seating do not violate the Americans With Disabilities Act, according to a federal appeals court.

In a decision released Friday, the Fifth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans rejected arguments made by a group of people with disabilities and the U.S. Justice Department that the new theaters operated by Plano-based Cinemark USA unfairly discriminate against people in wheelchairs.

Lawyers for the plaintiffs said they probably would appeal the ruling.

The lawsuit, which was filed in El Paso in 1998, contended that movie-goers who use wheelchairs are unable to climb stairs and are forced to sit in seats in the front of the auditorium that are inferior to the higher seats...
