California Scientists Make Strides in Race to Decode Human Genome.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Apr. 14--A Bay Area laboratory has completed a rough translation of three chromosomes in the 23-volume genetic blueprint for inherited traits in an ambitious race to decipher the entire human genome.

The Department of Energy-funded Joint Genome Institute, tucked away in an industrial park in Walnut Creek, announced Thursday that its scientists have analyzed the biochemical text of human chromosomes 5, 16 and 19. The institute finished its part of the Human Genome Project under budget and one year ahead of schedule.
