US West, Union Stalled in Effort to Extend Labor Contract.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Apr. 11--Unable to agree on pension-fund benefits, US West Inc. and its largest union on Monday announced they were unable to extend a labor contract for 35,000 phone company employees in Nebraska, Iowa and 12 other states.

Negotiators with Denver-based US West and the Communication Workers of America met over the weekend to see if they could extend the contract, which began in 1998 and expires Aug. 31, 2001.

Union negotiators were pleased with US West's proposed wage increases of 3.8 percent in 2002 and 3.9 percent in 2003, said Linda Hemmerling, president of the Communications Workers of America Local 7400 in Omaha. However, she said, the companys proposals to increase pension benefits were insufficient.
