Phoenix-Based Financial Services Company Posts First-Quarter Profit Gain.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Apr. 21--Strong performance in its two largest business segments helped Viad Corp. to a first-quarter profit gain of 28 percent.

The Phoenix financial and convention-services company earned $26.1million, or 28 cents a share, on revenue of $423.5 million during the period ending March 31. That compared with net income of $20.4 million, or 20 cents a share, on revenue of $375.5 million over the same stretch in 1999.

The 1999 quarter included income from discontinued operations of $5.5 million, or 5 cents a share, from Dobbs International Services. That unit was sold last July 1.

Income from continuing operations leaped to $26.1 million from $14.9 million.
