Apr. 26--IRVINE, Calif.--EMachines Inc., the upstart that brought down personal-computer prices nationwide, has bumped IBM from the top five sellers of PCs, industry reports said.
The low-cost computer seller, which has racked up huge losses selling below cost, continues to grab market share. The Irvine-based saw shipments increase about 80 percent, capturing 4.5 percent of the market during the quarter ended March 31, according to reports from Dataquest and International Data Corp.
The news helped eMachines' troubled stock, which closed up 10 percent Tuesday at $5.50.
IBM's market share fell because it stopped selling in stores, analysts said.
