CEO of Dallas-Area Hospital System to Step Down.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Apr. 28--Boone Powell Jr. announced Thursday that he will step down as chief executive of Baylor Health Care System on Monday, ending his family's five decades of leadership at the nonprofit hospital giant.

Mr. Powell, 63, said he would hand day-to-day control of Baylor to his protege, Joel Allison, now the company's president and chief operating officer.

"There comes a time when it's OK to make a change," Mr. Powell said. "I've been sensing it for some time. So I really feel honored I can continue in this new role."

He said he will get a new title - system chairman - and remain active with the hospital's foundation and its research institute. He also will lobby lawmakers on health policy issues and help coordinate Baylor University Medical...
