Apr. 24--CHAPEL HILL, N.C.--Not everyone would take a legal threat from the movie industry's powerful lobbying group as a challenge. But UNC professor and cyber-libertarian Greg Newby is not your average corporate pushover.

The scuffle began last month when the Motion Picture Association of America sent a letter to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill ordering that Newby remove software from his Web page that gives Linux users a chance to play DVDs on their machines.

The movie industry has yet to OK such software for Linux users, effectively cutting them out of the DVD revolution.

Newby, who had pulled the program off the Web and offered it to his students, wanted to fight.

In the end, the university forced him to take it...
