May 3--LEE ENDURES BIG BUMPS ON ROAD TO RICHES: Upon close examination, the road to riches usually turns out to be a bumpy path.

Case in point: the Thomas H. Lee Co., the Boston investment firm that made a name for itself and fortunes for its institutional clients through leveraged buyouts and other private equity investments.

The company and Lee himself made that name on the gaudy internal rates of return posted by each of the company's investment pools. The details of individual private equity investments rarely saw the light of day, with the exception of the occasional blockbuster sale.

These days, Lee has more money in publicly traded stocks. And that makes a lot more of the details, well, public. They aren't all slam-dunks.
