J.D. Power Survey Names Continental Airlines Tops for Long, Short Trips.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

May 10--Continental Airlines came up a double winner yesterday, snagging top honors as the best carrier in the country in an independent study of passengers.

The nation's fifth-largest airline, and Newark International Airport's busiest, took the accolades for both short- and long-haul flights in the eighth annual survey by Frequent Flyer magazine and J.D. Power and Associates. It was the first time any airline won in both categories, which measure consumer satisfaction on flights of less than and more than 500 miles.

Continental has won the long-haul category in 1996, 1997 and 1999. This was its first win in the short-haul category, which is mainly served by its subsidiary, Continental Express.
