Cisco Systems to Open Networking-Equipment Plant in Salem, N.H.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

May 11--In the latest sign that the Internet-driven new economy is breathing life back into New England's old manufacturing economy, Cisco Systems Inc. yesterday said it will open its largest factory in a building that once cranked out computers for Digital Equipment Corp.
Instead of workstations and servers, the 674,000-square-foot plant in Salem, N.H., will soon be making optical networking equipment, the latest technology for ferrying vast amounts of Internet traffic over fiber-optic lines.
Cisco is buying the plant for more than $40 million. At full capacity, it is expected to have 2,500 workers, about 25 percent more than it had at its peak when Digital owned it, according to Carl Redfield, Cisco's senior vice president for manufacturing, who had...
