North Carolina-Based Red Hat Forms Unit to Fund Open-Source Software Firms.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

May 9--DURHAM, N.C.--In its quest to make open-source software a global standard, Red Hat is forming a new venture unit to seed companies that share its vision.

The company today is to unveil Red Hat Ventures, a division that will make direct investments in -- and form strategic partnerships with -- start-ups in the open-source and Internet business.

Red Hat, which develops and sells its version of the Linux computer operating system, has been vocal about its intentions to support open-source software -- software that makes its underlying source code freely available. Now the company wants to back up that aim with cash.
