Telecom Firm to Buy Raleigh, N.C.-Based Internet Networking Company.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

May 13--RALEIGH, N.C.--BTI is buying a fast-growing Raleigh Internet networking company, the telecommunication firm's first acquisition in more than a decade.
The deal sealed Friday with US Datacom, a 4-year-old operation with a staff of 20 and annual revenue of about $10 million, gives BTI another item to add to its menu of telecom offerings: the ability to connect computer networks within an office or to computers in other locations. It's a service BTI sees a growing demand for as small and mid-sized companies -- BTI's primary customer base -- get online to conduct business.
US Datacom also builds protections against computer viruses and other network problems and manages network systems for its business clients.
