Web Portal Lycos Launches Free 12-Channel TV Online.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

May 16--Web portal Lycos Inc. is launching a free Internet version of cable TV, minus the brand-name programming.
Officials at Lycos, a leading directory for Web surfers and shoppers, are expected to announce today the first 12 channels of Lycos TV Online. The channels favor youthful viewers, with five devoted to music videos, three to cartoons and one each to extreme sports, movie trailers, comedy and online soap operas.
Suppliers of original content include animation houses Mondo Media of San Francisco and TheRomp of Hollywood, WireBreak of Venice, Calif., which specializes in brief video clips, and Vidnet, a Los Angeles-based distributor of sports videos.
