Georgia Regulators Reject Plea for New Area Code for Metro Atlanta.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

May 18--In what may be a national first, Georgia regulators have rejected --- at least for now --- imposition of a new area code for metro Atlanta.

Turning back the suggestion of those who administer the continent's phone numbers, the PSC argued that all the numbers in 678 have not yet been used. The PSC on Tuesday denied the petition for a new area code that had been submitted by the North American Numbering Plan Administration for the Federal Communications Commission.

While phone users have been dialing 10 digits for more than two years, the vote delayed the day when they may have to start dialing by remembering yet a fourth area code.
