Detroits Proposed Joint Automotive Effort May Alter Carmaking, Commerce.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

May 22--Automakers General Motors Corp., Ford Motor Co. and DaimlerChrysler AG want to create a multibillion-dollar electronic exchange through which they could purchase parts, streamline product development and communicate with thousands of suppliers.
The proposed joint automotive effort announced in February and named Covisint -- (KO-vis-int) for connecting, collaboration, communication plus vision and visibility plus integrated and international -- would be the world's largest business-to-business Internet portal, bringing together more than $250 billion in annual purchasing power.
