Intel Will Make $2 Billion Investment in Flash Memory Chips.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

May 23--Intel Corp., the world's largest computer chip-maker, said it will spend $2 billion during two years to quadruple production of flash memory chips needed to operate cell phones and other portable devices.
Intel recently increased its capital spending budget to $6 billion for this calendar year to keep pace with rising demand for flash memory as well as its microprocessors. In Oregon, Intel brought an Aloha plant out of retirement to produce flash. A large portion of the $2 billion devoted to flash will be spent revamping a factory it purchased in Colorado.
By boosting its manufacturing capacity, Intel expects to be able to produce a billion flash memory chips in the two-year period. That is equal to Intel's total production of flash since it...
