SBC, Electric Utility to Challenge BellSouth Dominance in South Florida.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

May 25--SBC Communications has taken its biggest step yet in challenging BellSouth's dominance of the local telephone market in South Florida, in the process throwing $110 million worth of business to FPL Group.
FPL, parent company of Florida Power & Light, said Wednesday that its FPL FiberNet unit has been selected to provide SBC with fiber-optic transmission capacity to enter five Florida markets in the next year. Miami and Fort Lauderdale will be first up, with service beginning as early as this summer.
SBC, based in San Antonio, could be a formidable threat to BellSouth's long monopoly on local calling in South Florida. SBC owns Southwestern Bell, Pacific Bell, Ameritech and Southern New England Telecommunications. Together, those make SBC the...
