SBC, Electric Utility to Challenge BellSouth Dominance in South Florida.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

May 25--SBC Communications has taken its biggest step yet in challenging BellSouth's dominance of the local telephone market in South Florida, in the process throwing $110 million worth of business to FPL Group.

FPL, parent company of Florida Power & Light, said Wednesday that its FPL FiberNet unit has been selected to provide SBC with fiber-optic transmission capacity to enter five Florida markets in the next year. Miami and Fort Lauderdale will be first up, with service beginning as early as this summer.
