Our current tale of Internet capitalism takes a few moments but involves a theme that should ring a bell: companies that need money and find it hard to come by.

Furniture.com, based in Framingham, has made a name for itself in the online world as the most popular site by far among a field of retailers selling furnishings on the Internet.

The company almost made it as a public company, under the wing of blue-chip underwriter Goldman, Sachs & Co., but timing conspired against the planned spring offering. As we all know, the public stock market window slammed shut and that was that.
