Disneys Television Networks Seek Winning Strategies for Two Racing Series.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

May 26--Walt Disney Co. has cornered the broadcasting market on open-wheel racing, a monopoly that used to be coveted by networks.
But the fracture in open-wheel racing has outside experts questioning whether Disney's exclusive hold on the Indy Racing League and Championship Auto Racing Teams series will generate big benefits.
"I think they're in a very difficult spot," Dean Bonham, president of the Bonham Group, a Denver television consulting firm, said of Disney's ABC and ESPN.
"Which league, or organization, do you promote? . . . They're disparate halves of what should be a healthy whole."
Can Disney increase open-wheel ratings anyway? It's an important issue for the Disney television networks because ESPN and ABC lost out to Fox...
