Burger King Escalates Legal Battle against Detroit Franchisee.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

May 26--The high-profile legal battle between Burger King and Detroit franchisee La-Van Hawkins escalated again this week, with the fast-food chain taking the extraordinary step of sending a three-page letter criticizing Hawkins to Detroit community leaders, from pastors to politicians.

It essentially called Hawkins a deadbeat who has stiffed the chain, suppliers, radio stations and landlords.

"He simply wants to avoid paying his debts, which exceed $6.5 million to Burger King Corporation and $30 million overall," says the letter, which is signed by Joseph Soraci, vice president of the Northeast region.
