Expansion of Gas Pipeline in Georgia, Alabama Set to Begin.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Jun. 2--Construction begins next week on a $108 million expansion of a major interstate natural gas pipeline to meet growing demand for the commodity in Georgia.

Williams, the Oklahoma-based energy conglomerate, plans to beef up capacity of its Transcontinental pipeline, known as Transco, by adding 44 miles of new pipeline alongside existing underground pipes in Alabama and Georgia.

Nineteen miles of 24-inch underground pipeline will be added in Gwinnett and Walton counties, and a compressor station in Newnan will be upgraded. Work on the so-called SouthCoast expansion begins Monday and is to be completed by Nov. 1, said Williams spokesman Chris Stockton.
