Jun. 5--INTERNET ADVERTISING: Spam, that much maligned form of Internet advertising, has taken on a whole new respectability.
That's because marketers now ask consumers for permission before they send them ads. It's called opt-in e-mail. Think of it as highly personalized junk mail with a twist: People actually ask to get it.
"It's cheap, fast, and effective," said Michele Slack, senior analyst with Jupiter Communications in New York.
It's so effective that some call it the "serial killer application" - it keeps on working while other forms of online advertising continue to lose their allure.
