Computer Manufacturers, Consumers to Benefit Most from Microsoft Ruling.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Jun. 8--ATLANTA--The biggest winners in a Microsoft Corp. breakup may be the computer makers and customers who have been dependent on the software giant that dominates about 90 percent of the world's desktops PCs.
Manufacturers such as Dell Computer Corp. should get more leverage in dealing with Microsoft, and customers could have greater choice in selecting individual products for the computers they buy.
"Before you were really tied down because Microsoft made you buy their applications," said Amir Ahari, an industry analyst at U.S. Bancorp Piper Jaffray. "You'll see tools that are leaner and a bit more bug-free because they don't have the Windows (operating system) to hide behind.
"Competition will be more pervasive," he added.
