Some Officials Think Boston Red Sox Should Consider New Site for Ballpark.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Jun. 8--Directed by Mayor Thomas M. Menino to build their new home next to the old one, the Boston Red Sox have spent more than $6 million on their plan for a new ballpark in the Fenway.
In recent weeks, however, the mayor effectively has blocked the team's ballpark bid by rejecting its proposals for repaying the $140 million in city aid needed to acquire and clean up the new ballpark site.
The Sox say they remain focused on the Fenway site, but the high cost of acquiring land there is prompting some business and political leaders to question whether the team should consider an alternative site that presents fewer obstacles.
