Massachusetts-Based Start-Up to Announce Deal with Time Warner Cable of Maine.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Jun. 12--WESTBOROUGH, Mass. --Broadband Access Systems Inc., a start-up aiming for a piece of the billions of dollars cable television companies will spend in coming years upgrading their franchises for Internet access and phone service, is announcing today its second product sale in the region, to Time Warner Cable of Maine.

Separately, two-year-old Broadband is also announcing that the country's two biggest cable Net service providers, Excite@Home and RoadRunner, are testing its gear, which recently received the cable industry's version of Underwriters Laboratories certification as a workable technology.

For now, the Time Warner deal is far more important as a credibility- and morale-booster than a moneymaker for Broadband. Time Warner is spending...
