Austin, Texas-Based Internet Firm Cancels IPO as 1999 Start-Ups Languish.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Jun. 8--In what may be a first for a tech company founded in Austin, Deja.com Inc. withdrew its aging initial public offering registration last week at the suggestion of the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The SEC housekeeping move was prompted by the dated information in the filing, said Richard Gorelick, Deja.com's chief strategy officer.

"It's about a year old," said Gorelick, who declined to say whether the company planned to start the process again any time soon. "The information gets stale after a while."

But if investors in one of the area's first Internet startups are disappointed by the delay, they may find solace by studying the fate of Austin's Class of 1999, the eight tech startups that went public last year.
