Dell Computer Corp. Products to Support Linux Operating System.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Jun. 21--Linux got a major boost Tuesday from Dell Computer Corp. in its campaign toward legitimacy and widespread acceptance.

Dell, the world's No. 2 PC maker, said it will now support Linux alongside Microsoft Windows and Novell NetWare operating systems on its products. Dell's partner is Red Hat Inc., the leading commercial provider of Linux.

For Dell, the agreement represents an opportunity to increase its Linux firepower in its assault on the market for servers.

Dell sees an increasing part of its future tied to what it calls Internet infrastructure -- Internet-service and software-application providers -- as well as dot-com companies and traditional businesses venturing online.
