Auto Purchasing Alliance Searches for Home, Leader.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Jun. 23--BRESCIA, Italy--Who will lead the multibillion-dollar auto purchasing alliance called Covisint and where it will be based are still anyone's guess.

But two things are becoming clear:

The new chief executive will not be from the auto industry.

Michigan will have to fight hard to attract the Covisint headquarters.

And the two are closely related.

Three candidates have been interviewed for the job and all three have generally let it be known that the Midwest is not the place to put Covisint headquarters, according to General Motors purchasing czar Harold Kutner, who represents the world's largest automaker on Covisint.

Kutner declined to identify the candidates.
