Jun. 22--SOFINNOVA INC. HASN'T GIVEN UP ON LIFE-SCIENCES COMPANIES: Over the past few years, venture firm after venture firm has walked away from investing in companies focused on the life sciences, a category that includes medical devices, therapeutic drugs, medical diagnostics and biotechnology. They abandoned health care to concentrate exclusively on information technology and communications, lured by the promise of the Internet. That left firms that invested in bugs and drugs as well as bytes and switches looking outdated.

But Sofinnova Inc., a San Francisco-based firm, likes the diversified approach. A lot. And as the group prepares to close on a $200 million fund, it's also breaking in a new managing director who will concentrate on life sciences. Jim...
