Jun. 28--A planned November ballot question that would require "open access" to high-speed cable Internet connections in Massachusetts -- expected to trigger a $10 million advertising blitz -- was dropped yesterday after proponents reached a compromise with AT&T, the measure's leading foe.

AT&T earlier this month took over MediaOne Group to become the state's dominant provider of high-speed residential Internet access over cable systems. Yesterday it agreed in principle to open its Bay State networks to providers such as America Online and Shore.Net by mid-2002.
