Palm Creators Take New Handheld Computer Company Public.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Jun. 20--The creators of the Palm handheld computer finally get to take a company public.

Handspring Inc., headed by Palm founders Jeff Hawkins and Donna Dubinsky, is scheduled to offer 10 million shares on the Nasdaq today under the ticker symbol HAND. The offering of 8 percent of the company, priced at $20 per share, would give the 2-year-old company a market value of $2.51 billion.

Handspring -- makers of the colorful, expandable Visor handheld running on Palm's operating system -- is backed by venture capital firms Benchmark Capital and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, two of the most powerful names in Silicon Valley.
