Jun. 29--ISRAELI CONCERN WORKING ON MAJOR DEAL WITH UPS: United Parcel Service is negotiating with Motorola's Israeli subsidiary for development of the next generation of hand-held computers used by the company's 80,000 drivers.

Spokesman Norman Black said the company has not yet requested bids for the computers. He valued the deal at between $300 million and $500 million and said it will take a year to reach a decision.

But Motorola/Israel has developed three generations of hand-held computers for UPS and is expected to develop the fourth, he said.

Jack Duffy, senior vice president for corporate strategy of UPS, discussed the prospective deal during the Georgia trade mission to Israel this month that was led by Gov. Roy Barnes.
