Jun. 30--The pitch was in the form of a cover letter attached to a TV set with a built-in VCR. Please watch our new ads, the pitch implored, and here's a complimentary new TV to watch them on.

The pitch came from Trellix Corp., a privately held Concord firm that says its personal-computer applications enable "mere mortals" and "everyday people" to create and publish their own Web sites.

Even many of the consumers who use the company's applications don't know Trellix by name, so there seems to be little point in mounting an expensive ad campaign that would seek to transform Trellix into a megabrand or household brand.

"Remember the dot-com [company] that spent half its marketing budget on a single Super Bowl ad?" Trellix's pitch letter began....
