Jul. 1--Newport Corp., the Irvine-based precision instrument maker, has a shot at becoming the Qualcomm Inc. of 2000 after turning in another dazzling performance on Wall Street last quarter.
Newport is now the sixth-best performing share on the Nasdaq stock market this year to date, followed closely by Tustin biotech concern Techniclone Corp., at No. 7. That puts Newport in contention to be the No. 1 Nasdaq stock at year's end an honor won in 1999 by Qualcomm, the San Diego wireless communications specialists.
Since January, Newport's shares have risen 581 percent on the Nasdaq Stock Market, lifted by investor enthusiasm about the key role the company is playing in the much-ballyhooed fiber-optic build out that's speeder and beefing up the Internet....
