Houston-Based Enron Goes from Sleepy Utility to Global E-Commerce Leader.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Jul. 2--Last September, Enron Corp.'s No. 2 man in Europe laid out an ambitious proposal to president Jeff Skilling -- it would be a good time for Enron to launch an online trading system.
Mr. Skilling didn't like the idea until the London-based manager said the Enron system wouldn't be a bulletin board service that simply matched up buyers and sellers.
Instead, Enron would be the principal as both buyer and seller of such diverse products as natural gas, broadband capacity and weather derivatives.
"I said `OK, I'm game. That sounds good. I like that.' He said, `Whew!' I said, `What's the matter?'" Mr. Skilling remembered recently. "He said, `We're rolling it out next month.'"
