Jul. 5--Fred Cate knows so much about the sleeper issue of the campaign -- Internet privacy -- that he's grabbed the attention of Gov. George W. Bush.

Cate, an Indiana University law professor and internationally recognized authority on privacy and electronic commerce, is an informal adviser to the GOP presidential nominee.

"Consumers should have control over the use of their information," Cate said. "The question is how do you make that control work?"

In other words, when you give out your name, address and credit card information over the Internet, who has the burden of deciding whether or not to share that information with others? Marketers or customers?
