Verizon Communications Cuts Cost of High-Speed Internet Service.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Jul. 7--Moving to electrify sales of its high-speed Internet connection service, Verizon Communications yesterday knocked down the monthly cost by 20 percent.

The new telecommunications Leviathan -- formed last week in the merger of Bell Atlantic Corp. and GTE Corp. -- reduced the charges on its Personal Infospeed digital subscriber line (DSL) service by $10, from $49.95 a month to $39.95. The price includes Internet access via Bellatlantic.net.

The change continues a downward trend in pricing for a service that debuted in the state in late 1998 at $59.95. And though it portends more competition, the move could give a long-awaited boost to a business that stood out as the biggest disappointment at Bell Atlantic, analysts said.
