First Union to Sell All Four Macon, Ga., Branches as Part of Repositioning.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Jul. 7--First Union Corp. plans to sell its four Macon branch banks in a "strategic repositioning" campaign that involves selling 84 branches nationwide.
Bank customers won't be affected until a buyer is found, company officials said.
"Over the past six months, we have conducted an intensive strategic review of our businesses," First Union CEO Ken Thompson said in a statement last week. The corporation's decision was to restructure its lines of business, including the sale of local branches.
First Union has 119 branch offices in Georgia. Five will be closed, including the four in Macon. The other Georgia branch being closed is not in Middle Georgia. First Union will sell all of its branches in Tennessee.
