Orange Bowl Committee Wins Rights to Internet Domain Name.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News, July, 2000 by DuPont, Dale K.

Jul. 8--The Orange Bowl Committee has won rights to "www.orangebowl.com" from a Chicago man who had registered the Internet domain name.

The committee sued Thomas Cornelison in federal court in April for rights to the name after trying unsuccessfully to negotiate with him. At one point, Cornelison said he would sell the name for between $3,000 and $5,000, but the Orange Bowl wasn't interested.

"We're a nonprofit organization," said Stephen Nebrat, the Orange Bowl's assistant executive director. "We don't have money to throw around."

The Orange Bowl's name dilemma isn't unique. As Internet growth has exploded, enterprising people have registered whatever names they could think of in hopes of selling them for a profit.
