Jul. 22--ATLANTA--Can the prince of plywood go toe-to-toe with the likes of Mr. Whipple?

Georgia-Pacific thinks so. In a surprise move earlier this week, Chairman and Chief Executive Pete Correll unleashed a major change in direction for the Atlanta-based forest products giant. After 73 years of churning out lumber, pulp and other commodities, Georgia-Pacific wants to flex its muscle in supermarkets and Wal-Mart stores across the globe.

In an $11 billion deal that would make it the world's largest maker of paper towels and bathroom tissue, Georgia-Pacific plans to buy rival Fort James. The merger would blow consumer products giant Kimberly-Clark out of the top spot and team Brawny and Quilted Northern brands with Georgia-Pacific's Sparkle and Angel...
