Dell Computer Investors Get Glimpse of the Future.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Jul. 21--Michael Dell isn't bashful about getting involved in Washington politics where technology policies are concerned, but he prefers the role of confidant, not candidate.

Dell, an adviser to and fund-raiser for Republican presidential hopeful George W. Bush, said Thursday that he wouldn't trade the chief executive's office for a Cabinet seat.

When Dell was asked the question by a shareholder at the company's annual meeting, he deferred to his wife, Susan, who shouted a decisive "no" from the audience.

Although many Dell shareholders wondered about the company's stock price, which has been locked stubbornly in the $40 to $50 range since splitting in March 1999, most praised the company and its namesake chief executive.
