Quarterly Earnings at Online Auction Firm eBay Exceed Estimates.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Jul. 26--Online auction company eBay Inc. reported second-quarter earnings that beat analysts' projections, thanks to robust growth in its user base and the number of auctions conducted through its site.
The latest numbers were little surprise to analysts, who have come to expect consistent earnings and revenue growth from San Jose-based eBay, one of the only e-commerce companies that is profitable. "It was a solid quarter," said Wit Soundview analyst Ryan Alexander.
eBay reported earnings of $13.2 million, or five cents a diluted share, on $97.4 million in revenue for the second quarter. The earnings beat Wall Street's three-cents-a-share consensus estimate. The results were also well above the $5.1 million, or two cents a diluted share, that eBay...
