Jul. 28--Of remaking many books, there is no end. That's not accurately Ecclesiastes, but it surely rings true for audio books. A popular classic in the public domain has more lives than a cat.

Proof of that at present can be found in Simon & Schuster's new line of Family Audio Classics, whose selling point is that they are "read by top Hollywood stars." This, at least, is not an idle boast. If you want a classic family adventure read by a Hollywood star, you're going to zoom right by the "Tom Sawyer" read by Wil Wheaton or Robby Benson to get to the new one read by Paul Newman (2 hours, abridged, $18).
