American Airlines Agrees to Settlement in Disability Discrimination Lawsuit.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Aug. 2--American Airlines Inc.'s parent company has agreed to pay up to $500,000 to settle an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission lawsuit filed on behalf of 50 people who say they were denied jobs because of their disabilities, according to court records filed Tuesday.
In the suit, the EEOC charged that Fort Worth-based AMR Corp. routinely used medical guidelines to reject applicants with illnesses that wouldn't affect their performance as flight attendants. Such practices are illegal under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
Suzanne Anderson, an EEOC supervisory attorney, said one of the plaintiffs was a New York City ballet dancer who was rejected because she suffers from Crohn's disease, a chronic inflammation of the digestive tract.
