IRS Orders Dallas Computer Services Firm to Lay Off 13 Foreign Programmers.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Aug. 2--The Internal Revenue Service forced a Dallas computer services company to lay off 13 foreign programmers Monday from a contract the company was handling at the agency's regional office, officials said Tuesday.

The programmers, of varying Asian nationalities, had worked for the IRS through Affiliated Computer Services for years, but were told last week they had to leave because they weren't citizens or permanent residents.

The move throws the programmers, who are here on special visas, into ambiguous legal territory. They are on administrative leave for the next two weeks and must find jobs in that time or leave the country if they want to return someday, legal experts say.
