Aug. 7--FORD'S MINI-SUV HITS ITS TARGET: Despite its rather fanciful name that continues Ford's penchant for E-word monikers for its sport-utility vehicles (it follows the Explorer, Expedition and Excursion), the Escape is a perfectly sensible mini-SUV.

In fact, between its positive attributes and consumer-friendly base price of $18,160, the 2001 Escape may be the pick of a field that includes the Chevrolet Tracker/Isuzu Vitara, Honda CR-V, Nissan Xterra, Subaru Forester and Toyota RAV4.

The test Escape did total $24,295, but it was the line-topping XLT (base price: $20,820), and Ford loaded it with just about every option offered except leather interior ($870). It had all the comforts found in a comparably priced sedan.
