Retired Phone Workers Urged Not to Work as Verizon Strike Replacements.(Knight Ridder/Tribune Business News)

Aug. 11--An association of retired phone company workers yesterday said it has asked its 46,000 members not to serve as replacements for the tens of thousands of operators, technicians and customer service representatives who walked off their jobs at Verizon Communications on Sunday.

The Association of BellTel Retirees said many of its members received questionnaires from the company in May asking whether they would work as replacements in the event of a strike.

C. William Jones, the president of the association, said he told the retirees to say no. And he gave the same advice again yesterday.
