Aug. 12--Emporia-area listeners to Kansas University's public radio station, KANU-FM, have not heard the station's signal since the end of July.

A Federal Communications Commission decision required the station to stop operating its translator station in the Emporia area, from which it has been broadcasting since 1986.

"We didn't have a full-power license," said KANU Director Janet Campbell.

But, a company called Family Radio had a full-power license for a frequency close to KANU's. The FCC ordered KANU to stop broadcasting from the translator station so the Family Radio station could be heard without interference.

KANU hopes to return to the Emporia area airwaves once the FCC awards it a full-power license and different frequency....
