Aug. 13--Brian Monahan has an itch for data that the phone company won't scratch.
A Web-site builder who's also developing a children's television program, Monahan says he is "desperate" for an Internet hookup that would enable him to send and receive data-heavy video clips at his home computer. But Verizon Communications, formerly Bell Atlantic Corp., hasn't gotten around to making high-speed Internet access available in his Bedminster neighborhood, and neither has his cable TV supplier.
That's galling to Monahan, a Bell Labs retiree. After all, he lives in an area that is home to Verizon Wireless and other telecom giants. Like most metro-area residents, he's being bombarded with ads pitching digital subscriber lines, the phone industry's answer to...
